Expect yoga to offer more than fitness. Yoga offers health, wellness, restoration and relaxation. Prior experience is not required.

  • Pick a time that works for you. Getting here is the hardest part
  • Dress like you’re going to the beach, it’ll be 105 degrees
  • Come with an empty stomach
  • Heavy meals less than 3 hours before class aren’t recommended
  • You can eat fruit or drink juice up to an hour before class
  • Bring water, a mat and a beach size towel (rentals available)
  • Drink water to hydrate for class, you’re going to sweat a LOT

Proper Hydration is key to so many of your body’s functions.

Bikram Yoga simultaneously cleanses all the systems of your body from the inside out.  It is important  to stay hydrated so your elimination systems (bowel, urinary, and skin) can support your efforts.

Do not wear perfume aromatherapy oils or scents

First Timers

We are so happy you have decided to join us!
If you feel a little uncertain or nervous about starting, no problem, rest assured that many people feel that way initially. Just don't let it stop you from coming to class. Bikram designed this class for beginners, so know that with a little practice and experience, you'll quickly feel right at home.
The teacher gives verbal instructions the entire class, so you don't need any prior experience. Just follow along the best you can. It's very important that as a beginning yoga student you don't compare yourself to anyone else in the room, and that you listen to your body first, which means it's ok to stop if you feel the need to take a break, sit down and rest, skip postures, drink water when needed, etc.
The majority of beginning Bikram Yoga students take about 5 to 10 classes before they really start to understand and appreciate what is going on during the class, including how to hydrate properly, how to pace themselves during class etc. It is essential as a new student you are very patient with yourself the first few weeks!
Remember, everyone in the room has experienced their own first Bikram Yoga class, even the people on the front row who have been coming for years. They make it look easy because they persevered, and you can too. Just pick a convenient time and come to class.

Tips to Prepare For Class

Drink plenty of water throughout the day so that you arrive to class already well hydrated. Come to class ready to sweat! Good hydration supports the healthy function of all of your body's systems, and it makes the heat feel comfortable rather than overwhelming.

Practicing Bikram Yoga requires energy, and food is energy for the body. However if you come to class with a full stomach, it could be very uncomfortable. Here are some general guidelines on eating before class: if you attend afternoon or evening yoga class, leave about 2 to 3 hours of time between your last large meal and your class. If you attend a morning yoga class, it can be very helpful to have some food calories in your body, so don't skip breakfast completely! Try having some fruit or toast (something that digests easily) an hour or so before class. These are general guidelines only, please talk to your Bikram teacher in the lobby if you have specific questions on this topic.

Wear clothes that will be comfortable in a hot sweaty room.

What To Bring
Bring a yoga mat, large towel, and water to class. If you forget these items or don't have them, you can rent all of these at the studio. And remember mats, specialty yoga towels, water and sports drinks are also available for purchase in the lobby.

Getting to Class
Arrive early before the class starts, typically 15 minutes early. New yoga students will not be admitted to class late, because there are essential instructions for new students at the start of the class, also the very first breathing exercise is essential to the Bikram Yoga series.

Yoga Etiquette

These are some guide lines for all who take Bikram Yoga first time or experienced practitioner.

Before Class Drink plenty of water throughout the day so you arrive well hydrated - this is very important! Classes start on time. Please arrive early enough to set up in the yoga room several minutes before class starts. First timers should arrive 15-20 minutes before class starts. Class starts on time, no late admittance. Plan to stay for the full class. Leave your shoes in the designated areas in the lobby. Bring only what you need into the yoga room including your mat, towel, and water. No cell phones, chewing gum, shoes, flip flops, or socks in the yoga room. Respect the silence in the yoga room before and after class. During Class, Enjoy yourself!! This is a life-changing practice. It is challenging, but can also be a lot of fun! Be a good role model. Practice your stillness and discipline between the poses. Notice if you are in front of a beginner. They will follow you. It's okay to take a break any time by standing still or sitting down during the standing series, or lay down on your back during the floor series. Rest as long as you need to, then join the class again when you feel better. Listen to your body first... meaning if you feel the need to rest, take water or electrolytes, then do so! There is no pressure to be competitive or do every posture. Don't push beyond your limits, and you will find this practice an enjoyable challenge. A yoga mat and towel are required for everyone in class. If you do not have a yoga mat or towel, they are available for rent and/or purchase in the lobby. If you have a combination yoga mat towel (i.e. Breathe Mat), please use a standard yoga mat underneath, if you sweat enough to fully saturate the yoga mat towel. Please be kind and adjust your mat to allow others space to practice. If you bring tissue into the yoga room, keep the clean and used tissue on your mat. Follow along with the teacher and try your best in each posture. If you think you can't do a posture, simply set up the alignment according to the instruction, don't worry about flexibility and depth, those qualities develop with time. After Class Respect the silence in the yoga room. Be careful not to disturb the people around you as you exit. Please respect our studio by helping to keep it clean, it's your space! If your mat and towel are fully saturated with sweat, place them immediately in a re-usable plastic bag, so your items do not create puddles on our floors, benches or counters. If there is a crowd in the changing rooms, please limit your shower time to 2 minutes. Don't forget to bring home all of your personal items.
